Understanding the Silver Market
Silver is unique among precious metals because approximately 50% of its demand comes from industrial applications. Electronics, solar panels (photovoltaic cells), medical equipment, and water purification all rely on silver's exceptional electrical conductivity and antibacterial properties. The remaining demand is split between investment (coins, bars, ETFs), jewelry, and silverware.
The silver spot price is determined by trading on COMEX (the metals division of CME Group) under the futures ticker SI=F, and through the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) daily fix. The LBMA Silver Price is set once daily through an electronic auction, while COMEX futures trade nearly 24 hours on weekdays.
Silver mine production is concentrated in a few countries: Mexico, Peru, China, Poland, and Chile are the largest producers. Notably, about 70% of silver is produced as a byproduct of mining other metals (copper, lead, zinc, gold), which means silver supply is partially dependent on demand for those base metals.
Silver and the Green Energy Transition
Solar panel manufacturing is one of the fastest-growing sources of silver demand. Each standard solar panel uses approximately 10–20 grams of silver paste for its electrical contacts. As global solar capacity installations continue to grow, this industrial demand segment is expected to remain a significant price driver.
Electric vehicles also use more silver than conventional cars, in components like electrical contacts, sensors, and battery management systems. The broader electrification trend supports long-term silver demand growth from the industrial sector.
Silver as an Investment
Investors access silver through physical bullion (coins and bars), exchange-traded funds (the largest being iShares Silver Trust, SLV), futures contracts, and mining stocks. Silver is more volatile than gold, offering potentially higher returns but also greater risk. Its lower price per ounce makes it more accessible for smaller investors.
